Red Mountain Dwelling
Birmingham, Alabama
As a result of the design competition, Design Initiative was chosen by one of the clients to move forward on the design and construction of a new single family dwelling located on Red Mountain. In addition to pursuing a contemporary design aesthetic, a primary goal of this project was to design a home that pursued a LEED platinum certification.
The site was designed to limit disturbance of the existing flora and fauna, artfully incorporate the new construction into the existing topography, and allow for the long-term health and stability of the building and site as an integrated system. The house is designed to optimize views and solar access to the north and the south, while minimizing exposure to the east and west. In addition, the massing of the new residence facilitates cool daylighting and passive ventilation of all living spaces. A combination of low-tech passive and high-tech dynamic MEP systems are integrated into the design to out-perform conventional systems by as much as 50%.
